General information about Ibiza
Ibiza is the third biggest island of the autonomous region of the Balearic Islands located in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea in the bay of Valencia, 100 km away from the Spanish mainland and about 250 km from Africa. On the island there are big mountain areas and a lot of bays.
Major Cities are Ibiza Town, Santa Eulária des Riu and San Antonio. As the second official language in Ibiza, in addition to Spanish, is Catalan, the island has also a Catalan name, Eivissa. The dialect spoken in Ibiza is called Ibizenco.
Ibiza has a population of about 100,000 inhabitants on an area of 572 sq km.
The city of Ibiza is located on a hill at the seaside and is surrounded by impressive fortifications. In 1999 the UNESCO declared the town World Cultural Heritage.
The climate in Ibiza is the most pleasant one of the Balearic Islands. Usually the winter is quite soft as the average daily temperature does not fall very often below 15°C. During the summer months it is never really scorching. Because the island is quite flat and there is always some wind blowing, it does not rain very often.
If you want to hike through the mountains or explore the landscape by bike then you should visit Ibiza between February and April, because then the island is not overcrowded but the nature is blooming.
Between April and September the temperatures as well as the tourist figures are at its highest. If you want to enjoy the numerous beaches and do not mind not being the only person then you should go to Ibiza in summer.
